Day 16: WET and GRAY today.....and getting a bit cooler......ALL to be expected.

Sometime in the wee hours of the morning.......little tap-tap-taps bouncing on the "rubber" roof awakened me and I realized the predictions had materialized......it was beginning to rain. Did I mind? No.....not really because we were expecting it. I had covered the new BBQ grill, put the bikes(my new one included) under the bedroom overhang.....and made preps for this dropping of drops. I just rolled over, clutched the bed-covers a bit more....and drifted back into....wherever I was before the tap-tap-taps began.

When I did pull my sagging hulk out of the bed....quietly, as always.....I realized just how dismal it looked outside....yep, memories of last January flooded from my aging brain cells(no short term memory loss here)....and I began to hope that this was not the return of last year's miserable Texas weather. Predictions do not anticipate that........!!!!

The 1st Lady had to rouse herself up as she had a 9AM Line Dancing class over at the Rec Hall.....and so, after one of those HUGE ruby red grapefruit that we had plucked off of a tree across the street, she finished off with her cereal and a hot cup of tea. OMG....I haven't discussed these great grapefruit since we first arrived. The 1st Lady and I have a LARGE one for each of us every morning........they are just tooooooo damned good not to take advantage of these wonderful sweet yellow balls hanging on all the trees around the resort.

Soooo, after she was gone, I had a peaceful 2nd and 3rd cup of my steaming French Roast coffee. Yep...it is DARK and rich......and yes, it is Starbucks brand. I checked in the H.E.B's grocery store yesterday for another brand.....a change of pace.....and nope!!! Nothing that would take the place of what I have here........but, I am ALWAYS looking and checking for a change......the buzz word of the political campaigns this year. I'll keep looking.........

Soooo, when the 1st Lady returned, we soon had a phone call from our new Cedar Creek RV Owners Club members who are across the street. Ken wanted us to go to lunch with them......and, of COURSE....we told him YES!!! Never ever do we pass up the chance to have the opportunity to meet new people.....new friends....and, at the same time get a great chance to EAT!!! Soooooo, Ken and Jeanne, came by.....plucked us out of TheHowserHouse.....and off we went to search out a place we had eaten last year: GONZALES' HAMBURGERS!!!!!

Oh yeah!!!!!! We found it, and as I said last year, it is NOT signed....nada!!! You HAVE to know that there is a small, very cozy little cafe there inside this very unimposing building that NO ONE would know is a cafe!! The streets on both side of the corner cafe was jammed with RV tow vehicles: pickups!!! And.....there were people attempting to jam themselves through the door, the intense smell of hamburgers and onions on the grill pulling them inside, pushing a bit and yet, trying to be nice, polite senior citizens!!!

Sooooo, we four found ourselves managing to get inside and became even more anxious to get up to the counter and get our orders placed.......our mouths salivating for the juicy, HUGE, HUGE, HUGE hamburgers that would soon be laying in front of us on the tables. Honest to God.....I have NEVER EVER seen hamburgers this large being placed on the grill.......they are almost the side of a dinner plate.......most certainly larger than a sandwich/salad plate! And....they ARE not thin!!! And to think.......the menu lists a double hamburger! My God......how could any one eat a DOUBLE one of these monsters???

And.....when they called our names, we were the OWNERS of these huge pieces of ground beef that were dripping with onions, lettuce, and tomatoes....along with mustard and mayo. I had also ordered an order of onion rings.......WOW!!!!! Incredible!!!! We had been invited to share a table that would seat seven.....two other very nice Winter Texans from Ohio, asked us to join them......all tables allow for group/family sitting, no matter who the family is. We sat down with our massive sandwiches and began to eat, to talk, to become acquainted with not only Ken and Jeanne, but the Ohio couple. GREAT conversation, GREAT hamburgers, GREAT onion rings, GREAT FRIENDS!!! What more can be asked for??????

The place was still seating people when we left about an hour later. The deal is: this little place stays open as long as there is still freshly ground beef available to make the burgers. When they run out.......the place closes,....usually by 2pm. The owner grinds up the beef early in each morning.....he cooks them on the grill when the orders are placed(NOT like McD's which are taken out of a warmer that is NOT so warm).....and then we, the Winter Texans eat these juicy, dripping, incredible hamburgers!!!!!!!

Am I over stating this?????? NO, NO, NO.....just ask anyone who has been there!!!! Where is this place???? Drive to Donna, go south on Main Street until you reach Silver Street, and then turn left on Silver. Drive to approximately 14th street and if you see the trucks and vehicles......FEAR NOT...you CAN find a place to park. You HAVE reached Gonzales' Hamburger Cafe!!!! No sign.....no directions....no fancy building.......just follow your nose and get thyself inside for lunch!!!

The rest of the day????? Recovering from overeating!!!!! We laid around, watching and feeling the fat cells expanding and growing all over our bodies.......a feeling of guilt.....BUT, a feeling of satisfaction that we have experienced these hamburgers for the second time in less than a year!

The 1st Lady finally pulled herself off of the sofa later this afternoon and went over to the gym to exercise, draggin herself and her hamburger fat cells into the truck, and then onto the treadmill. Me???? I just laid on the sofa and watched her working out by watching the closed circuit TV from the gym.

This evening? NO supper.......not hungry! And so, the showers continue, our bodies continue to expand, our minds continue to feel guilty for overeating, but we know that it has been so rewarding to be with Ken and Jeanne......great humorists and tellers of very funny jokes.....and to get to know them better. And so........without any doubt at all.....................

LIFE IS INCREDIBLY GREAT!!!!!.....And, I hope it is for all of you, also!!!!!
