Oh…oh…..I thought for certain when I awoke this morning that it was going to be one of those really dreary days here on Prince Edward Island……BUT…..as the morning progressed, it became a gorgeous day with a few light clouds and very warm temps. GREAT for running around on this island to see a few sights!!
My morning rituals were completed by 7:30 this morning…..and after a couple cups of French Roast coffee…..I was good to go! I spent some time reading the usual newspapers online….WHEN….and I do repeat…..WHEN I could get online. There are just toooooo many people staying here and using the internet Wifi to allow access for any length of time to the internet. Mine just keeps shutting down…….and then I have to do all sorts of magical things to succeed in restoring the connection to the Wifi…..UGH!!
About mid-morning, the 1st Lady, Pete and Jane, Moe and myself all left for a driving tour of the southeastern part of this island…….with the final destination being Cap-Egmont where there is one of the 50 or so lighthouses on the island. Buzz….well, he decided to remain here at the cg….and so he was assigned to take care of Jack and Cricket….the two dogs that need some tender loving care, as well as bathroom privileges and some outdoor romping around.
So, I drove the truck and off we went to the west……stopping at various lookout points along the little roads and highways….narrow and shoulder-less, but with quaint little houses, villages, and gorgeous farms spread across the undulating green, green hills of Prince Edward Island. Many of the homes have very steeply pitched roofs as well as being many varied colors. There are some modern homes here, but many….perhaps the majority are from the middle of the last century, if not older than that. Everyone of these homes are beautifully landscaped with soooooo many flowers and they are all in bloom at this time!!! It was a stunning drive with the colors of these flowers, the houses, the various light and dark greens of the trees and fields, as well as the blues of the water surrounding the island.
Each time you go through a little village, there are always many little churches with very tall and slender steeples which can be seen several miles away. We made a stop at a very unique Roman Catholic Church outside of a small village……and OMG, was it ever a work of fine art inside it!!!!!!!! We were just stunned and amazed at this place……sooooo many details from the Gothic period……or should I say they are of the Neo-Gothic era……the church having been built in 1902. We really were glad we stopped to go inside this lovely church!!
We went on to Summerside…..a bustling town on the south shore….and a touristy town to say the least. We ambled about at the little shopping area which had many little shops on the wharf and featured mostly touristy types of items to purchase. These buildings were also of many colors……and were all in very good shape!
Since it was after lunch time, we found ourselves a grill and pub on the pier….and sat outside on the upper balcony for lunch. A delightful place with sailboats going out to sea, as well as some Canadian Coast Guard members practicing life-saving techniques in the cold waters……and all of them in special heat retaining “uniforms” which allowed them to also float in the waves, etc.
From Summerside, we drove on about 17 miles and made a stop at a place where there have been three buildings erected using only concrete and BOTTLES for the walls, and inside décor!!!!!! While they were small buildings, they each had no less than 10,000 different kinds and colors of used bottles of all kinds in the walls…..as well as the bottles being made into pews for the little Chapel that was all made from bottles!!! WOW…..what an idea……the designer/builder having seen one out in Vancouver and grabbed the idea and technique and ran with it! When he began this idea…..no one was recycling bottles….so he would go by all of the clubs, parties, dance halls, etc, etc. to collect the bottles…..and then people began to send him and ship him bottles as word got out about his projects……until many bottles came from various parts of the world!
As well as these very, very unusual little buildings, there were some just incredible gardens laid out around the buildings of bottles….and we certainly enjoyed walking around these pathways and admiring the wonderful flowers…and the arrangements in the gardens themselves.
Leaving there, we drove a few more miles until we reached the Cap-Egmont Lighthouse…..and walked around it….admiring it and the coastline which looked out to New Brunswick…except it was barely visible because the hazy conditions. Soon after that we drove back to Cavendish and the KOA….taking about an hour to make the drive.
This evening……..we just sat around talking, laughing, and telling little stories from our pasts…….and in most cases revolving around our times and experiences with our grandparents when we were “growing up”. WOW……wasn’t that a LONG time ago!!!!!!
And sooooo, it was a very laid-back kind of day……a bit of sight-seeing here on Prince Edward Island….and a great time just seeing this absolutely gorgeous Province of Canada!!!! WOW…….soooo wonderful!!! And, after a day like today……why shouldn’t we all agree that………………..
LIFE IS REALLY, REALLY GREAT!!!!!!…..And, I hope it is for all of you, also!!!!!
