Day 13, Jan 13, 2010: An afternoon in Mexico!!!!!

Another cloudy day.....does the sun really exist???? I am beginning to wonder about it. After my morning rituals, I fixed a bit of breakfast and enjoyed my coffee with it. The 1st Lady had gone to the rec hall for an hour and a half of Line Dance Class.......something she was excited about!

About 9:45 I went over to Doug's motorhome and we left in his car for the Library building. We had decided to "join" the Photography Club/Class.....which is held in one of the rooms on the floor above the Library. Today was more of an organizational meeting for the club, with discussions of which way we wanted to go....what we would like to focus on, etc., etc. We do have an "assignment" for the next two meetings....and it should be interesting to complete them!!!

Returning to our section of the resort, we parted and reminded ourselves that we were to meet at the border with Charlie and Katherine for an run over into Progreso, Mexico. We all arrived on time at the entrance to the bridge.....where you go through the turnstyle after paying your $.25 to cross the bridge. After walking across the Rio Grande River.......it was dingy looking, mostly due to the dark, overcast sky....and then arrived in Mexico. We checked out some of the barber shops....and showed Charlie and Katherine where we have had our small number of hairs trimmed up.

Then....on down the street, stopping briefly in a couple of shops....and after squeezing through the stall-laden sidewalks, we arrived at Elsa's Cafe. Once again...as we did last week....we went through the main area of the cafe and walked into the bar/lounge in the rear of the cafe. We seated ourselves.....and soon, our waiter....the same one we had last week....was there at the table taking our drink orders.......and we all ordered Margaritas.

There was a young lady at the keyboard......and was providing some very good music for listening...and dancing, on the dance floor. The waiter then returned with some incredible chips......from quartered tortillas which had been deep fried in oil and they were really hot......and lots of salsa. These chips were just amazing!!!!!!!! Soooooo good!!!! We then ordered our lunches....and they were all good!!!!!! Our waiter remembered that I had ordered "Elsa's Special" last week.......great, great guy!!!!!!!

After dinner, we danced for a bit......and the second round of Margaritas certainly seemed strong!!!!! Not too bad for $1.00 for on the rocks and $1.50 for frozen!!!!! We had a great time......again, laughter comes sooooo easy when we are all together.....we seem to feed off of each other as I have mentioned before.

After dinner, we walked on down 2 or 3 blocks, went a block to our right and entered another little mall with some little shops surrounding a tiny plaza. We took a peek inside Arriba's...another bar/cafe where there is always some country music being played for the many senior citizens and Mexican nationals who like to dance. We stopped in a couple of small stores to look at the many items for sale.....and then we head back to the main area of town. We parted with Charlie and Katherine as they had some items to purchase and some other things that they had to get done.

Doug and Diane had dental appts up closer to the bridge, so we parted with them. The 1st Lady and I then did some shopping on our own....mostly just looking around the colorful, filled shops. We did stop by the tortilla "factory" where they make thousands of tortillas, with all of them coming down the conveyor belt to the front counter where they are packed in small bags each weighing 1 kilo. We purchased a 1 kilo bag....and it was still very warm.....just had been cooked and bagged. Can't wait to cut these tortillas into quarters and deep fry them with a bit of salt added.....YUM!!!!!!

We then stopped at a little stall along the sidewalk.....the 1st Lady was looking at some beautiful silver jewelry. While she was looking and trying some pieces on.......I began talking with this older (yes, older) gentleman....and we discussed the enjoyment of shopping here. He asked me where I was from.....and I told him that I was from south of St Louis. He said he was from south of STL, also!!! Soooo, I asked him where he lived.....and, OMG.....he said he lived in Fredericktown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I told him that is where we lived, he was just as surprised as I was!!!! He introduced himself .....I didn't catch the first name...but his last name is Pettis. We talked about the small chances that we would meet on a street in Progreso, Mexico.....and laughed about it.

The 1st Lady and I then ambled on down the sidewalk, stopping in some little shops, but not purchasing anything. We then arrived at one of 60 or 70 dental offices where Doug/Diane had appointments. Doug was just finished so, we then went to one of the Eye Glass shops and tried on some glasses, trying to decide which ones we liked...or, looked the best. I'm really thinking about getting a new pair here.

While Diane saw the optometrist, we went and got a cup of coffee....and then met her later. We then walked across the bridge, went through Passport Control on the USA side.....being asked what we had purchased, which for us was only the kilo of tortillas for $1.00!!!! Back to the parking lot on the American side, we each took our own vehicles and headed back to the resort. The 1st Lady and I stopped at a couple of places and then returned to TheHowserHouse for the evening.

A GREAT DAY!!!!!!! We sooooo enjoy spending an afternoon in Progreso!!! Everyone is soooo friendly....even though there are many who are constantly trying to get you to buy items that they are selling.....trying to make a living for their families.

And sooooo, as always........

LIFE IS JUST REALLY, REALLY GREAT!!!!!!!.....And, I hope it is for all of you, also!!!!!
