April 25, 2009: Warm and Wonderful day filled with Birthdays!
Yep......the clouds rolled in and the clouds rolled out, but overall it was a beautiful day here at Dr. Jeni's house!!!
The house was filled with the chatter, laughter, screaming, running, yelling, playing of lots of children most of the day. With a BD party this afternoon, the morning was spent in keeping the little ones from getting tooooo excited, but allowing them to have their fun playing, also.
Becky and Rachel arrived around noon....and so shortly after 1pm, the BD party for Rachel began......with family and a couple of close friends being the guests. As at all BD parties....it was cake and ice cream, party favors with hats, and then opening of the gifts. Following that, it was time to ride the new bike, play with the new toys, and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon just playing with cousins and friends.
This evening, after grilling some burgers and hot dogs, it was time for Rachel's BD.....and once again, it gift time....followed by more cake and ice cream. Then.....everyone changed and went out on the decks.....to the lower one to enjoy the hot tub under the stars. It was great fun watching for "falling stars".....and this sagging hulk of Me was the only one who managed to find one.....and WITHOUT my glasses....haha!!!
This evening, after changing into some dry clothing, I have spent researching the trip to Peru(Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu, Lima)....and trying to decide IF I can get the prices and the reservations on my own....and make it cheaper than taking a tour. Some of the tickets within Peru are soooooo much higher than if you were there to purchase them rather than online or by phone......for example: the flt from Lima to Cuzco...50 minutes over the Andes....online is $438 RT, however if purchased there it is only $116.....the problem is getting a reservation after arriving in Lima only two days before we would fly to Cuzco. Hmmmm,....I have found a great site online with lots of info about this....names to contact in Lima who can help, etc., etc. Then there are the hotel reservations(Lima, Cuzco, M.Picchu, Lima), the bus trip from Cuzco to Machu Picchu and return, a personal guide for Machu Picchu, etc, etc. Sooooo, lots to do in a short amount of time..........
And sooooo...the day has quickly disappeared, not exactly quietly, haha....but it is gone. With that said.....as usual.......
LIFE IS JUST INCREDIBLY GREAT!!!!!.....And, I hope it is for all of you, also!!!!

April 24: 2009: A WOW-WOW Day......
Oh yeah.....this was a two WOW day.....pretty, warm, spring-like, and a busy day!
The 1st Lady and I had a health insurance meeting at 9:30 this morning at the F'town High School. We both have health insurance through the school district....mine being a secondary policy for Medicare...and hers being the primary/only one that she has. Well....long story short....the district is changing insurance providers and so we needed to attend this meeting to TRY to learn more about this change and what it would mean for the both of us. For one....I am NOT happy about this.....it will make about a $20 increase in the cost of my monthly meds...and I am not happy about that....($240 per year). Also.....the St. Francis Hospital in Cape G. is not a network hospital....so, that will cost us more, should we have to use it. Soooo, I am going on Monday to discuss a different policy with a local insurance man...a friend of mine.
From the 1.5 hour meeting, we then left for STL, as we had packed and put our luggage in the car prior to the meeting when we left the stick and brick. We stopped in Festus at the Panera/StL Bread Company for lunch. Mine? Just ok.....not as good as the last time we ate at one of these great places.....perhaps I just ordered the wrong thing???? Anyway....it was the hot panini....chicken with bacon and then a small Greek Salad(THIS was GREAT). It was the sandwich I was disappointed in......hmmm, believe that might be the first time I have used that word for anything at this establishment!!!! Oh well......
On in to STL we went........and the first stop was at a Kitchen and Bath design shop.......as we are going to remodel our older bathroom......a complete make-over. Obviously, it won't be before we leave the 1st week of June....but when we do return late this summer we hope to get it done!???
We didn't really see anything there that was exactly like what we have in mind....as were looking at showers, jacuzzi tubs, vanities, sinks, etc., etc. Not really that much on display there!!
On down Manchester Rd we went...west...as had great hopes for spending some time at EXPO....the incredible high-end store owned by Home Depot which has fabulous kitchens, baths, drapes, flooring of all kinds, hardware for cabinets, etc., etc., etc. We have purchased many items there: drapes, our kitchen cabinet handles, knobs, etc., pillows, lighting,.....just too many modern and gorgeous items to mention. BUT.......OMG!!!!!! The place is out of business!!!!! Yep....the entire HUGE store is closed!!!!! We are both just sick about this!!!!!! This is our FAVORITE store in STL.......and now it is gone.....obviously a by-product of the down turn in the economy. I am actually quite surprised as this store is, as I said, a high-end store....and caters to those people in STL who build those HUGE homes.....and I am surprised that it is closed because they would normally be expected to have the clientele who keep it in business. Guess you never know what this recession will bring......
Leaving there....going further west on Manchester, we headed to Bova....the very modern/contemporary furniture store where we have purchased some furnishings for our home. WELL.....DAMN!!!!! It, too, is closed and out of business!!!!!! Sooooo, that leaves very few, if any, exceptional home decor businesses in STL which stock only contemporary/modern furnishings.....and the ones that I can remember...well, they may also be out of business....!
Fighting the rush hour traffic, we continued on west to the Washington-New Haven countryside where Dr. Jeni/Darrel and their three children reside. With Ava and Rachel....two of our granddaughters celebrating their birthdays tomorrow we decided to spend the weekend up here. This evening the LARGE home was full of small children running excitedly around the house....as Ava's other grandmother and three grandchildren arrived from Branson.....so there is MUCH going on tonight.

April 23, 2009: WOW....what a beautiful spring day!!!
The day began with clouds everywhere....the humidity higher than it has been......and temps warmer outside than inside the stick and brick.....hmmmmm.......it seemed as if the online weather.com was going to be wrong! However....by mid-morning after my Fr Roast and breakfast....the sun came through steadily and it turned into a great morning!!!
About that time....I decided to finish the War of the Yard....do or die! Soooo, putting on my "battle clothes"....I headed out to take care of finishing the mowing.......and, after about an hour including a water break for about 10 minutes....I knew that I had won this battle!!!! Then......it was time to cut back all of the beautiful dead plumes and foliage of the ornamental grasses that we have planted over the years. This always turns out to be more a battle than I think it should be.....as it isn't the actual cutting of the plumes and stems....but it is the picking it all up that takes sooo much time. And.....today I fought this battle three times!!!
Then.....it was time to trim a white dogwood tree.....as there were several rather large dead limbs still on the tree. Finding the saw.....getting the ladder.....and then calling for the 1st Lady to come and hold the ladder as I climbed up to reach the dead limbs. Well.......it took more effort on a couple of those very thick branches than I had anticipated.......and by the time I had completed this battle......I was really much more exhausted than I thought I would have been!!
Water was needed!!!!!! I was dizzy.....and very weak.....soooo, ...I drank two bottles just to get by body back into some kind of action.......I realize now that I was beginning to suffer from dehydration......and it came on rather quickly. However.......I was soon ok......and enjoying the patio as I watched some of the birds at the feeder.
The remainder of the afternoon I spent on doing some travel research online. We have found a real deal on flights to Lima, Peru, which must be purchased by May 8th......so, is this the right time to go to Machu Picchu? A round-trip flight from Chicago to Lima for only $385!!!!!! And, it is good through the fall......so, I began to check on a temporary schedule......looking for hotel costs in both Lima, Cusco, and the Machu Picchu area, flts from Lima to Cusco, the train to Macchu Picchu, guides, etc., etc., etc. LOTS to research in a short time!!!!!! Coordinating ALL of these factors is part of the fun(?) and part of the problem.....however, I believe we can save some $$$ by doing this ourself, as long as we can get a guide at the different places we visit. I'll keep you posted on how this is going.....and, if we can get it all worked out. We have some other personal business that must be taken care of this year, but I feel we can get this all worked out....with time and effort!
It has been a year and a half since we made the almost three week trip to Egypt and Jordan.....and so, we are behind on our overseas traveling. We had planned to make one major journey each year.......but, last year we elected to go to the Maritime Provinces in northeast Canada....Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia......and it was SUCH a WONDERFUL trip. Sooooo, it is time to get our butts in gear......because you know: LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO STAY IN ONE PLACE!!!! And, with each passing day, at age 66, those days are becoming less and less. I have not....yet.....been to South America and that makes me want to go even more. By visiting there this coming fall, I would only have the continent of Antartica left to visit and then I would have been to all seven of them!
We are going to Ava's birthday party this weekend......and it should be fun. We will also be celebrating Rachel's birthday at the same time........they are just a couple of days apart!
And soooo, the War of the Yard has been won....the yard is under control......and with lots of things to think about for this possible journey...... as always.....

April 22, 2009: BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
As usual......I was up at 7am.....my great wake-up elixir, French Roast coffee.....and then after the 1st Lady was up, the standard morning rituals were completed....and my day began. Outside??? OMG....it was gorgeous.......the day progressed to the low 70's...and it was exactly like a winter's day in the Texas RGV!!!!! Heading outside about 10am....I immediately returned and changed into shorts.....and ooooohhhhhh, how good it felt to be back in shorts once again!!!
Most of the day was spent in the yard.......and I do feel now that I am WINNING in this war to regain control over my yard!!!!!!! I won several battles today....and believe that soon the war will be over.....and I can once again stand and look over my property and claim it as MINE!!!! And....the best thing is that in order to win, it is not necessary to torture any of the insects, birds, or wildlife that I find on my property!!!!!!!!!!!!
By late afternoon, I called the day's battles(raking, picking up limbs/sticks/branches, trimming weeds, cleaning out the fence line, and mowing) finished....and I realized that it was 5 o'clock somewhere...and so, I had a couple of large doses of my dark red medicine to help my tired body begin to recover. I intend to spend tomorrow, rain permitting, to complete this "War of the Yard"......and I believe I can wrap it up!!!
A light supper was enjoyed by the 1st Lady and myself.......but before we ate, she fixed each of us an Amaretto Sour......ummmmm-good!!! And then the evening has been spent watching a few programs on the plama......American Idol being the preferred show. Hated to see Anoop go, but even though he has a good voice, he never quite made his performances "pop"......just never got excited about what I was hearing/seeing when he performed.
And soooooo, goes our day at the stick and brick......a gorgeous day, but one that has left me a bit weary. Only six weeks until we leave........YEAH!!!! And, as always......

April 21, 2009: HURRAY!!!! YEAH!!!!! My laptop is FIXED!!!!!
WOW!!!!!!! This morning, while I was finishing the morning rituals.....I had a message on my cell phone.....and it was the Toshiba Service Center in STL!!! Yep.....my computer was fixed and ready to be picked up!!!!!!!
I had already taken the truck into the local glass repair shop....City Glass....and my new windshield was to be installed today. After dropping it off by 8AM.....I walked the mile back to the stick and brick......had a cup of coffee....and then took a shower, etc., etc.
After the phone message, I made a trip out to the Supercenter, picked up a few things for the 1st Lady....and by 10:30 or so, I was on my way up to STL....anxious to get my laptop! It took a little over an hour and a half......and then I was inside the repair shop. Yep......the best was yet to come!!!!: IT WAS TOTALLY COVERED BY THE TOSHIBA WARRANTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was more than I could have possibly hoped for after the choking incident two months ago in the RGV in Texas!!!!! Soooooo many $$$$$$$ were saved today by the Service Center!!!!! WHEW!!!
And sooooo, it was an amazing morning....and the day continued to be just super after getting the laptop. Not wanting to trust anything.....I stopped at the Panera Bread Co....where they have free Wifi.....and sat down at a table and in a few seconds I was online and checking my email. WOW...it is fixed!!!!!! Excited I was......and still am this evening!
So, I hopped back in the car and drove south towards the stick and brick. But, first.....I stopped in Farmington and had the oil changed......it was way overdue! Returning home......I immediately began to get my laptop organized for my use......everything had been wiped off and lost during the repairs. I had made a disk with many of my files and documents just before the choking incident, so I have almost everything that I lost. All pictures were saved, except about a dozen of the last ones I took before I lost everything..........so, it wasn't too bad.
This evening????? Answering some emails, getting Skype set up again, and also enjoying the American Idol episode.....and my vote STILL goes to Adam!!
And sooooo, a big surprise about the laptop......and it just made certain that.....

April 20, 2009: Enjoying the warmer weather....
Ahhhh, the sun actually came up today without many clouds to block those warm rays.........and it was really super! Today for this sagging hulk of Me was just a normal one around the stick and brick......and, I was certainly glad that I didn't have anything pressing that I HAD to do. Still was a bit tired this morning after a quick 400 mile round trip up to Mexico, MO, for about three hours.....but wouldn't have missed those short hours for anything!!!!
After puttering around late this morning......inside and outside......I put together our new patio table umbrella and got it set up, cleaned off the table, and then brought out the chair cushions....sure the hell hope I am not getting these things out toooooo soon!
Then after a quick bit of lunch, I cranked up the lawn mower and mowed the grass in the front section of the yard........cursing as I went along as I had to stop and through small branches out of the way. I did this LAST WEEK......and they have bred and left other branches there!!! DAMN!!!
Later this afternoon......the beautiful day dissolved into a cloudy and very windy afternoon with cooling temps which were made more noticeable by the Texas size winds of 30 mph!! Soooo, I gave up on the mowing and put the mower away, out of the sprinkles that were dropping upon the 68 hairs on my head, ruining my hairstyle for the day!!! Soooo, as it was 5pm somewhere.....I enjoyed a couple of glasses of my dark red medicine.......feeling the need for that dosage after working on the lawn this afternoon.
I did take some test pics with my new camera........still not satisfied with the results, but with some adjustments they were a bit better this afternoon. I have been working attempting to get moving objects.....things in the wind that move.....as well as stationary objects. I also had a couple of little birds at the feeders this afternoon and I made a few shots of them.
This evening......after the 1st Lady fixed dinner.....I just grabbed a cup of hot tea and became a couch potato in front of the plasma. A nice way to end a day of puttering.......and a good way to prepare for tomorrow....and possibly another day of puttering???!!!! My truck is due at the glass repair shop at 8am in the morning, so I will walk back from there which I need to begin doing daily.
And so....Life in TheHowserHouse stick/brick moves through each day with no certain responsibilities, no real agenda, and you know........it is a good thing!!! I am already beginning to go into TheHowserHouse on-wheels and wish it was sitting somewhere else.....or even just moving down the road. Only a little more than six weeks before we do head to the southwest!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will CERTAINLY be ready before THAT time!!!!!
Tomorrow.....another day, weather-wise, like today......and I won't complain about it. And....as always................................
